This essay considers the pressing and intersecting issues of coal-fired power generation, the rise of natural gas as coal’s replacement, the role of renewables, and the ever-present factors of market economics, global warming, and, just as crucially, the ways in which these issues and factors impact the lives of real people. In this essay, I provide support for this seemingly simply yet infinitely contentious idea: Natural gas must continue to supplant coal as the primary nonrenewable fuel source for electricity generation, both national and internationally, but only as a temporary stop-gap or ‘bridge’ to an eventual reliance on renewable sources. Each of the elements of this thesis are presented in turn and supported with evidence, followed by consideration of—and response to—a counterargument concerned with the lives of energy sector employees likely to be severely affected by these changes.
