Read the selections from Darwin's books carefully. Pay close attention to places where Darwin acknowledges the controversial nature of the idea of evolution. What specific passages seem to you especially provocative, and why? Also, look carefully at this recent Gallup poll summarizing Americans' current attitudes toward evolution and creationism.

After reading the poll and thinking about those passages in Darwin's work that seem to you provocative, please do one (or both) of the following:
1. Explain (give your opinion) why evolution remains so controversial an idea for a significant percentage of people today.Note, I am not asking you to comment on whether evolution is true, or whether evolution or creationism is a better explanation for human and other biological existence. I am asking you to take a step back and see the conflict clearly---simply to explain what, in the theory of evolution by natural selection, is so provocative, and why.
2. If you were raised in a particular religion, and/or currently affiliate yourself with a particular religion, find out, and report to the group, what exact position your religion holds on evolution. Also, do you accept your religion's official stance on evolution? Why or why not?
