In 1657, a group of Quakers sailed across the Atlantic to escape persecution from Puritan authorities who controlled England at the time. MacPherson (2006) states that the Quakers were forced to surrender their property on some occasions and pay heavy taxes to worship their religion peacefully. Many arrived in New Netherland due to the fact that the Dutch colony was considered more tolerant than its English counterparts. Jackson (2007) notes that the Netherlands “enshrined freedom of conscience in 1579, when it clearly established that no one shall be persecuted or investigated because of his religion.” However, the Governor-General of New New Amsterdam, Peter Stuyvesant, was far less tolerant of Quakers than his countrymen, and chose to crack down on the Quakers in similar manner to the English...
