The author describes the rearing of children, including conception, pregnancy, and childbirth, as genuinely human experiences. However, within the religions' authoritative texts, these understandings are frequently exploited in narratives telling of the association between humanity and the gods, the association between individuals and groups, or the origins of families or even peoples. In addition, these understandings are frequently exploited in symbolic or metaphorical language. From the stance of events around the childbirth breastfeeding period, the author reveals how the Hebrew Bible texts describe motherhood and religion, including the origins of a nation.

The author argues that the Jewish religion reveals a severe relationship between faith and practical principle. Accordingly, Jewish law has the written and the oral tradition sections. The basis of the written law is the Torah, the Scripture's first five books. On the other hand, the oral laws interpret the written Torah. The key fragments of the oral law are Responsa Literature, Post-Talmudic Codes, the Talmud, and the Mishnah. Life is a process; it has a beginning and an end. The author further argues the agreement concerning the time when human life begins is still not grasped; a moment illustrating the beginning of human life does not exist. The newborn is a continuous process after fertilization, gastrulation, and birth. Procreation is recognized in the Bible as the gift of God.

Analysis

"Human families reflect a distinctly human understanding of conception, pregnancy, childbirth, and the rearing of children," and "in the Hebrew Bible, this is the case as well" (Bergman, 2020, p. 132).

More precisely, conceptions of the family as the unsurpassed social basis of life are as old as Jewish society, from the First Book of Moses (Genesis) to modern times.
