Introduction

The main aim of this essay is to evaluate visual rhetoric in cigarette Advertisements. It is a universally and widely acknowledged fact, that cigarettes have the negative impact on people’s health, regardless of their age. Most smokers use cigarettes regularly because they are addicted to nicotine. Addiction is explained as a compulsive need for the use of intoxicants, regardless of their harmfulness. Most smokers recognize the harmfulness of cigarettes and expressed a desire to stop smoking. According to research, almost 35 million people from all parts of the world, really trying to quit smoking. Moreover, less than 7% of those who quit smoking manage to abstain for more than a year. On the other hand, most return to smoking within a few days. Apart from the fact that nicotine is addictive, the reasons why numerous people smoking are the following facts:

• Easy availability of cigarettes products;

• Absence (or presence of only a small number of) legal and social consequences of smoking;

• Sophisticated marketing methods used by cigarettes manufacturers.

Results of recent research explain the mode of action of nicotine on the brain. The key to explaining the intoxicating effects of nicotine is the knowledge that nicotine activates parts of the brain that are responsible for feelings of pleasure. Chemicals in the brain important for the awakening of desire for drugs is the neurotransmitter called dopamine. Nicotine increases dopamine levels in the centers for pleasure.

Mayans and Aztecs consumed cigarettes in various rituals. Until recently, the consumption of tobacco by cigarette was practiced in Mexico, Central and North America and the Caribbean.
