Hello and welcome to America! The reason we waited this long to get here is because it took Americans this long to start their own homegrown literature. Up until now, printing was limited to newspapers and journals that were cheap to produce. Most of the books read were shipped in from Europe. Nothing of great literary quality was really written here until the 19th century. Actually, we visited here before with the Native American Cinderella, which have a lot to do with what we are about to study.
This next unit will introduce you to Native Americans' ideas of education and their understanding of the nature of children. Knowing what you now know about Puritan theology, education and how they viewed children, you will find that Native Americans' perspective was the complete opposite. We have already seen some of those fundamental differences in the Native American Cinderella story "The Hidden One." The stories you will read will further show how different the two cultures were.

Native Americans believed that a child's curiosity was a gift that should be indulged. They believed in learning through experience, through making mistakes. They also believed that children have as much to teach adults as they do to learn from their experiences. Unlike the Puritans, they did not think education should prepare children to die, but it should prepare them to live and thrive. If this reminds you of the British Romantics, Blake and Sinclair, you are correct to make this connection. Native American ideas about children and childhood has a lot in common with the Romantic ideas that children are better than adults because their imagination is not corrupt. They trusted children to learn from experience and to teach adults something too.
As you read, try to identify all the places where Native American attitude towards children is shown. Look especially at the ending of Gluskabi. What does the ending tell us about Native Americans' respect for children? What does the Eagle's final words to Gluskabi's suggestion tells us about what Native Americans thought of children's way of seeing the world?

2- Read the "American Indian/Alaska Native Education: An Overview" and "Native American Stories told by Joseph Bruchac", then write a 200 word "Journal" of your personal opinion and give your ideas of what you read and watch on the readings. Please note that this SHOULD NOT be a summary of the readings.
