DAP program

The research on early learning experience has, over the last decade or so, been focused on two fronts – the social-emotional and the cognitive. These two areas of child development have been thoroughly researched, and the latest findings indicated that children who are taught in learner-centered approach environments consistently score much better than others in creativity, verbal skills and cognitive reasoning (Copple & Bredekamp, 2009; Hyson & Biggar, 2006; Burts et al., 1993; Frede & Barnett, 1992).
Furthermore, research by Frede & Barnett (1992) reported better first grade assessment results for children who attended DAP preschool programs. These findings were corroborated by Burts et al. (1993), who found that children coming from low-income families and attend DAP in preschool tend to perform much better on their reading assessments in first grade when compared to children who attended regular preschool programs (Copple & Bredekamp, 2009; Hyson & Biggar, 2006; Burts et al., 1993; Frede & Barnett, 1992).

DAP today
The problem, however, is the fact that, despite the encouraging research results, most schools still tend to engage in the more traditional teaching methods rather than DAP adjusted programs. The main problem is the fact that very little pre-school educators have access to or adequate understanding of DAP, how it works and more importantly how should it be applied in a real setting. What is more, parents are often unaware of the benefits of the DAP adjusted pre-school practices when compared to the more traditional teaching systems (Copple & Bredekamp, 2009; Hyson & Biggar, 2006; Burts et al., 1993; Frede & Barnett, 1992)....
