Throughout my life, I have always had a passion for science. I have loved the sense of discovery and wonder that comes with exploring the macroscopic world that we perceive and the excitement of thinking on a less than microscopic level to make sense of the what, why and how of it all! Chemistry, in particular, fascinated me most as it provided an avenue to explore these questions, whilst seeking and contributing to new knowledge which furthers our understanding of the universe. During my academic career, I’ve had outstanding teachers who ignited interest in and respect for their subject, and others who made learning (of even something I was initially excited about) an unbearable chore. As a keen observer of a multitude of teaching approaches and methods, I’ve found that the most effective teachers were the ones who prioritized student engagement. Engagement may be facilitated through the (a) establishing a productive rapport the students; (b) strategizing what and how informational content will be delivered; and (c) looking to provide students with relevant skills and experiences which that will assist in advancing their academic and professional careers in the future.
