About Brent
I taught at university math departments for about 12 years before leaving to work in industry. As a teacher, I've taught a wide range of classes ranging from algebra to differential equations.
My research focused on dynamical systems and stochastic differential equations ideas applied to environmental fluid dynamics. Since leaving academics I've mostly been working with financial modeling, such as options pricing and interest rate models.
I have a pretty diverse mathematical background, my masters degree was in pure math, whereas my doctorate was in applied math, so I have experience in, and can help with, a wide variety of different areas.
Part of what attracted me to math was learning why and how things worked the way they do. Since so many ideas are expressed with mathematics, by learning how and why math "works", almost limitless doors are opened.
My teaching and tutoring philosophy is based on this - I try and explain as many different viewpoints as I feel may be useful to the problem(s) at hand, try to discuss alternate ways of approaching a given problem, and relate ideas to ones previously encountered.
