English grammar can be characterized by two major voices. The two voices which characterize English grammar include the active and the passive voice (Sheridan, 1984). When utilizing the active voice, the subject performs the action, while when utilizing the passive voice the subject of the sentence receives the action (Sheridan 1984). Distinguishing between the two major voices can be difficult at first, but once the grammarian understands the academic rules associated with the two voices the identification process becomes much easier.
