Essay on â€˜How impairment can become disablingâ€™ Students will be able to choose from two of the following titles;

1. How Visual impairment can become disabling
OR
2. How Dyslexia can become disabling

Using lecture materials and information from personal research, write an assignment on the social implications of an impairment or condition, which has been assigned to you by the module tutor. The word limit is 1500 words. Harvard referencing system should be used throughout the assignment. (The word limit does not include your reference list)

You must identify two key barriers affecting people with visual impairments or dyslexia and consider their developments alongside the influences of medical and social models of disability (LO1). Draw upon a range of academic books and journal articles to provide examples of how these barriers affect people with impairments (LO2).

â€¢ Consider examples of the chosen barriers in everyday life using relevant journal articles

â€¢ Link barriers and situations in EACH barrier to the influences of medical and social models

2. Explain the key characteristics of the chosen impairment that demonstrate its diverse nature using academic support.

3. Identify and define 3 social barriers from the 5 discussed within lecture (Physical, Information, Attitudes, Systematic and Knowledge) using academic support.

4. Demonstrate how these barriers may occur for people with the chosen impairment in real-world examples, using academic support from research journal articles.

5. Apply theories of disability to the chosen barriers and examine how these theories may influence the concepts of inclusion and integration.
