Assignment Steps:
1. Write a 16-measure melody based on our handout Principles of Classical Melodic Writing. You may write your melody in any meter and in any key other than C major or A minor. Your melody MUST contain at least 1 of each of the following note values: Half note, quarter note, eighth note, sixteenth note. You MUST also have at least 1 dotted note value.
a. Optional: You may wish to add lyrics to your melody.
2. Analyze your melody to determine all possible chords implied by your melody. Choose the chords (triads and/or sevenths) that you will use to harmonize your melody and choose where your chords will change.
3. Write chord symbols above your melody (Gm, D, f#o, etc.) in the precise places that your chords begin. Also, write the Roman numeral symbols that correspond to your chords below your melody.
4. Write a piano part to accompany your melody. Make sure that your pitch choices correspond to the chords you composed previously. The texture of your accompaniment is up to you and can vary within your piece.
a. Optional: You may wish to replace the piano with another instrument, or multiple instruments of your choice.
5. CIRCLE ALL DISSONANCES. If you’ve written pitches in your melody or accompaniment that do not fit your harmony, then circle them. ASK YOURSELF: Do these pitches function as proper dissonances?
6. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR MELODY IS PROPERLY NOTATED. This means that:
1. Each measure should have the proper number of beats
2. All stems should be positioned correctly
3. All beams should be used to reflect the meter
4. All note heads should be clearly positioned
5. All accidentals (both in the key signature and any additional accidentals) should be clearly positioned
6. The proper clef should be placed at the beginning of each staff
7. The key signature should appear after the clef on each staff
8. The time signature should appear after the key signature on the first system only
9. Barlines should be used properly
10. A double-barline should be used to end your piece
11. EVERYTHING IS CLEAN AND CLEARLY NOTATED
PROJECT OPTIONS:
1. Use the sample measures provided for you. I have written (using solfege and note values) measures 1, 8, 9 and 16. You may copy these and fill in the remaining measures with your melody that connects to the materials provided for you.
2. Disregard the sample measures provided for you and start everything from scratch.
