Letter to the Editor

o Typed Letter to the Editor of a local or regional newspaper or magazine presenting a detailed argument in support of one or more music education programs in your school system or school district. Your letter may advocate in support of an existing program OR in support of adding a new program (or both).
o Your letter should present a logical argument in support of music education, with an emphasis upon a particular program(s) or school system.
o To receive full credit for this assignment, you must draw from the topics that we have already covered in this class:
 Historical foundations of music education
 Philosophical foundations
 Psychological foundations
 Advocacy (research literature)
o It is also appropriate to mention other information that might be specific to the history and/ or culture of your particular region.
o While it is NOT required, students are strongly encouraged to write a “real” letter to the editor of a relevant newspaper or magazine and actually send it in for publication. Remember to keep your letter positive – better to lift up the importance of music in the schools rather than criticize your administrators for not supporting music as much as we might hope.
