Question
Please read both "Letting Go" by David Sedaris and "What We Want is the Head of the Friar" by Sarah Stillman before beginning this assignment. Read the articles with Bunn's reading like a writer RLW in mind. Once you have read the articles, choose only one of them on which to write this reading response. These articles are meant as examples of effective narrative writing. Both articles, in different ways, elicit definite reactions from their readers. RLW means finding specific things the authors do to make their readers react a certain way.

Assignment

Write a 500 word (minimum) reading response in which you give your own reaction to one of the two articles above. What message(s) or moral(s) do you think the author tried to communicate to readers by telling the story? Do you think the author succeeded? Why?

Also look for specific things in the article that you think were effective narrative tools or techniques the author used to reach-her/his audience. As the article is a model narrative given to you in a writing class, what can you take away from it to possibly emulate in your own narrative writing? Possible things to consider might be:

1. The title
2. Visual graphics
3. How the story is organized
4. Outside sources if any
5. Specific words or phrases that are used
6. The persona or tone of the wording
7. How dialogue is used
8. Narrator (author) commentary about the story

Requirements

1. You must refer to specific places in the article to support your comments about them.
2. Even though this is not an essay, you should write it in paragraph form with a heading at the top.
3. Your response must be a minimum of 500 words with no maximum.
4. Outside sources are not required, but if you use them you must cite the source with both an in-text parenthetical citation and a works cited list at the end. Use MLA citation style.

Reading Response to Sarah Stillman’s “What We Want Is the Head of the Friar”

Sarah Stillman’s narrative of the ordeals faced by illegal immigrants trying to find their way to America is nerve-cracking. The writer aims to shed light on the existence of a criminal network that operates on the Mexican border under the watchful eye of authorities. Mexicans whose sole intention for trying to leave Mexico is to find better work opportunities are left to the mercy of criminals who not only rob them of their life savings but their lives as well. As a reader, the narrative is captivating and evokes strong emotional reactions owing to the many writerly choices made by Sarah Stillman.
