The history of computer science is a short one, but in the small window of time that humans have had access to the digital computer, computers have enabled humans to radically transform society, improving our ability to compute, store information, and analyze data. Mathematicians have experimented with mechanical calculators since the 1600s, using these mechanical contraptions to assist with accounting and simple calculations. The year 1937 saw the birth of the first digital programmable calculator, the ASCC/Harvard Mark I, developed by International Business Machines (IBM) in support of the war effort during the last part of World War II. In subsequent decades, research labs and companies in industry developed new and more powerful computing machines. In 1953, Cambridge University created the world’s first computer science degree program. This marked the birth of computer science as field of study and research in academic institutions, the beginning of a legacy which would extend to this day.

The subsequent 50 years of innovation and development in computation led to the creation of new programming languages and improved digital computers which became more computationally powerful and physically smaller with each generation. In 1953 the COBOL programming language was released, quickly followed by FORTRAN in 1954. These two languages marked the first two widely used programming languages.   In 1969, the UNIX operating system was developed and released by Bell Laboratories. In the 1970s, IBM, Apple, and Radio Shack innovated personal computing by releasing small form-factor, cost-effective computers for the consumer, bringing computers into the household. In 1985, Microsoft launched its revolutionary Windows operating system. The year 1990 saw the development of HTML and the creation of the World Wide Web, and in 1996 was the advent of the search engine Google. The late 1990s and early 2000s saw the popularization of the Internet. In 2007 Apple released the iPhone, the first smartphone which brought computer functions to a mobile platform. In the decade since, computers have permeated every aspect of our modern technical world through the data revolution, with all of the world’s information available at our fingertips, at the swipe of a finger.

Topics and Subtopics

The study of computer science encompasses a number of fields relating to computation systems and software. It is the study of systems which interact with data, typically in the form of computer programs and software. Computer science involves all aspects of software: theory, design, development, and application. At 24HourAnswers, we have tutors who specialize in the different fields of computer science as well as the different programming languages.

Computer science can be broadly considered in four categories:

  • Theoretical Computer Science

Theoretical computer science involves the mathematical abstraction of software systems, emphasizing how logic and computation can be used to solve problems. Subcategories of theoretical computer science would be data structures and algorithms, the theory of computation, information and coding theory, programming language theory, and formal methods. The topics of computer science resemble mathematical work and involve proofs and analysis of theoretical problems.

  • Computer Systems

Computer systems involves the study of computational structures which serve as the building blocks for computation. This would include computer architecture and computer engineering, which represents the organization of a computer system, from digital logic to systems architectures and operating systems. This also includes computer performance analysis, concurrency and parallelism, computer networks, computer security and cryptography, and databases.

  • Computer Applications

Computer applications involves the use cases for computers and software that enable computers to play an impactful role in the real world. Topics such as computer graphics and visualization, human to computer interaction, scientific computing, and artificial intelligence all are applications of computer science. In these topics, computers and software are being put to use to demonstrate the power of computation in solving real world problems.

  • Software Engineering

Software engineering is the study of creating software – the design, implementation, and refinement of software to ensure that it meets a purpose. This would be the applied topic within the computer science field, representing the writing of code to solve challenges. At 24HourAnswers, we support a large number of different programming languages: C and C++, Java, LISP, MATLAB, Perl, Python, Ruby, and web development languages such as HTML, XML, PHP, JavaScript, and Adobe Flash. Our experts have decades of experience programming writing industry-grade software and can help you get caught up to speed in your programming language of choice!
